Happy Belated Birthday Sesame Street!

The world celebrate Sesame Street’s 40th Birthday, on  Nov 4th 2009, and frankly that evoked so many good memories I have of my childhood. I looooooved Sesame Street..and I still do!

Sesame Street is my first introduction to English. Back then, I watched Sesame Street on RCTI (Indonesian Channel) still in English language, with tiny subtitles below (unlike today’s re run which use dubbing). So I learned a lot about English words, pronunciation, and structure. I remember, I learned about the English words for colors, numbers, animals by watching the shows.. Imagine, how many 8 year old Indonesian child could know that the English for “Badak” is Rhinoceros? I even know how to spell it then. Thanks to watching a segment in the shows where they rimed “Rhinoceros” over and over again, while showing a picture of the animal.

Sesame Street got me interested about English and somehow learning that language is never difficult for me since.  I dare say that Sesame Street is the reason why I am good in English (without any intention to brag). That’s way I wish they will aired the original version again in Indonesian TV, so that Indonesian children can learned about that International Language early on.

Thanks to Uncle Google, I manage to dig up several clip that I really really really loved back then on when I was a little girl. It turns out there are hundreds of Sesame Street videos on YouTube. Wooow..it really made my day yesterday, watching those old video of Ernie, Bert, Big Bird, Cookie Monster, Kermit, Miss Piggy, Grover, Count Dracula, and what I love the most..Elmo!

So, to commemorate what I think as the BEST Children TV Shows ever, I want to share my best moments of Sesame Street.

Ernie Do De Rubber Duck

I watched this video of Ernie singing “Do De Rubber Duck” at elementary school and is stuck in my head since. Even now, 20 years later, I still remember the chores:

“And do de Duck, Rubber Duck Duck, Rubber Duck, Rubber Duck, Duck, Rubber Duck Duck, Rubber Duck Duck, Rubber Duck, Duck, Rubber Duck, Rubber Duck Duck, Rubber Duck, Rubber Duck Duck.”

(you can check it if you want..every single word fits). Watch it, it’s so great! 🙂

Near & Far with Grover

This is another funny video when Grover teaches the different between Near and Far.

Ernie & Bert, the Newspaper

The funniest character on Sesame Street I think is Ernie & Bert. How Ernie always annoys Bert is hilarious. This is one of the funniest clip when they were fighting about reading the newspaper.

Ernie Counting Sheep

If you are a Sesame Street fan too, you will remember that Ernie usually annoys Bert when they both tried to sleep at night, because Ernie usually had a hard time trying to fall asleep. This is the funniest and most famous clip of Ernie annoying Bert at sleep. Enjoy! 🙂

Those are some of my favorite moments on Sesame Street. If I had time, I will try to search for more clip of Elmo and Cookie Monster. Those two are my favorite character.

Until then, Cheers! 🙂

I Love You Full Mom!

My Mom just visited me in Bandung.. I don’t know why, but even in my age of 20-something, I still get homesick.. especially with my mother.. I miss her a lot.. Like right now.. I miss her already.. 😦

It’s not that I am a spoiled kid.. I don’t think I am.. It’s just that, beside the constant love and affection, there are little things that she always do that is funny and amusing, and like what Javanese people say: “Ngangenin” (making you miss somebody).

Some of the things that “Ngangenin” about my mother are..

  • She never let go of her handbag. Not ever, unless me or my brother take her place and hold on real tight to the bag. 🙂 Maybe because she once almost lost her wallet to a pick-pocket, while trying to lift my sick toddler body inside a bus. She let go of her awareness once and focus on me, and it almost cost us the money to pay for my doctor. Luckily, the wallet was return to her after she bravely stand in front of everyone on the bus and demand that whoever it is that took the wallet to return it to her because she need to get me to a doctor. I admire her boldness.. 🙂
  • When we are in a restaurant.. She loves to try food but never finish it.. She ordered a couple of things on the menu, then only took 2 to 3 spoonful and she was done. Hence, left me or my brother to finish the meal.. Since I could never stomach much of it, my brother usually fulfilled the task for us. No wonder he is so plump now.. 🙂 But, both of us still willingly do it for her, just for the sake of seeing her happy..
  • She never stop praying in the car when I was in the driver seat. D’oohh.. I guess that said a lot about what she thinks of my driving ability.. ;p But I figure at the time, she had good reason to doubt me..hehe..
  • Whenever me or my brother break a promise to her, something bad happen.. I’m serious, It’s like a curse that kept us from being naughty. Like what happened to me last weekend, I promised to be back home at 9pm, but I stayed at the mall late, and guess what happened? My car broke down.. go figure! 🙂
  • She always does a 1 to 2 hour preach of advice every time I’ve done something bad.. At the time it was frustrating..but later on it was like an anchor to me to evaluate and improve my self. I once deliberately went to tell her about my wrongdoing, just to get her to knock the sense out of me..to get me off that road permanently. But now, I would think twice before I do that since I’m afraid it will increase her blood pressure.. ;p
  • She loves to buy her kids things but always think twice or trice before buying herself things..and in most cases, she usually end up not buying. That’s why now, when I have my own income, I like to buy her things that she loves, even when she never ask for anything.. It’s worth it to see the glow in her eyes..

Those are some of the things that I will always miss about my mother.. No matter how old I get.. I’m sure all of you have your own version of things you miss of your mother.. Just don’t forget to show your mother how much you love her..even if you think they already know. 🙂

I Love You Full Mom! 🙂

  • Another victory from my favorite team in Barclays Premier League, Liverpool crushed Manchester United yesterday 2-0. Yipppiieeeee!! And Torres scored the opening goal.. I’m so happy I can’t stop smilling.. Thank you ESPN for bringing it LIVE yesterday!

Here is the preview of Liverpool vs Manchester United (2-0) 25 October 2009:

  • Try a new look for my BLOG.. Yes, this blog’s theme has changed in case you haven’t notice.. How do you like it?? 🙂 I try a more simple look with white background and a new picture for my header. This picture was taken by my friend and favorite photographer: Faisal Reza. He’s the BEST photographer I know, and you can see more of his work here. (tuh..Sol..sesuai janji.. gw promosiin abis daahh.. Thanks for letting me use your photo for free Man.. It was so kind of you.. 🙂 )

A little note about my header picture.. It’s a view from the dock in Ujung Kulon where we went with our friends last year. That dock hold a special place in my heart since I love to sit there in the afternoon..just in silence..looking at the sea. And at night we all sit there quietly just watching the stars.. There was a lot of stars that night..fresh air..no pollution.. Hhhhh… I miss the place already. That dock really represent what this blog is all about to me.. A place where I could sit in silence with my thoughts..pour my mind out into writing..and just be ME. Diriku..Pikiranku.. (Duuh..kok jadi curhat.. mulai ngelantur niih..maap.. moving on..)

  • My anti-social mood. This past week I just love to stay at home and just be alone.. I know I should not be this way.. I should mingle.. go out with friends.. But I just got tired with all the noise.. It is nice sometime to be able to just be alone..and enjoy my aloneness.. Very happy..  🙂
  • Found another Great Role Model: Greg Mortenson. A great humanitarian, who risked it all to go back to the impoverished Pakistan Village in the Karakoram Mountains and delivered his promise of building a school to the people who once saved his life. Over the next decade, he managed to built not only one but fifty-five schools in remote villages across Pakistan and Afghanistan. A great and inspiring story.. A story of a person who live for something higher than self.

You can read his story in the book “Three Cups of Tea”.. I hope you will be inspired as I am.. Enjoy.. 🙂

So..tell me what’s on your list??

Breaking Out of Your Comfort Zone..

Sorry for disappearing for a while. It’s just that I’ve been feeling so negative this last couple of months which affected my writing. Since I don’t feel keen about publishing my complaints and confusion, I decided to lay low for a while. Gratefully, my mood is gradually getting better..and Walah..at last, an inspiration came to write something positive rather than the usual endless rants and complaints.

It started from watching a show called MTV MADE

(Yes..I recently became “anak nongkrong MTV” ;p).

MTV MADE is a self-improvement reality television series broadcast on MTV. The series follows teens who have a goal and want to be “made” into things like singers, athletes, dancers, skateboarders, etc. The teens are joined by a “Made Coach”, an expert in their chosen field, who tries to help them attain their goals over the course of several weeks. Made documents the process the teens undergo as they try to achieve their goal.

I don’t usually dig reality shows..cause sometimes I think they are just “fake” reality TV, with scripts and actors who acted as if in real situation (which proved to be true for some cases). But I must admit, this one is different. It gives a positive message for viewers to break out of your comfort zone and go after your goal..however impossible and ridiculous it may seems.

One of the episode which is hilariously funny is about a 17-year-old boy name Keith, a big-muscled-senior and part-time garbage man known around his high school for being a meathead and a redneck. He wants to shed that image by doing something graceful, thus asked to be MADE  into a Ballroom Dancer. HUH?? Yeah..right!

But this show is serious. They gave Keith a professional dancing teacher to teach him how to Tango and prepare him to compete in the school’s Harvest Ball Dance-Off competition. They put him through ballet lesson, Yoga, jump rope, even circuss classes. And believe me..for a boy his size..it’s Tough! But through the hard training, and a couple attempts of quitting, he finally pull through and manage to win the competition. How about that?

There are a lot of other episodes of teenagers trying to reach their dreams, such as becoming a cheerleader, rapper, hip hop dancer, rock star, triathlete, debater, pro wrestler, Skateboarder, even a ladies man! Made is currently in its 10th season, and has recently started a series in Canada, France and Germany. Overall, this is the one reality show that I recommend to watch. While other reality shows mainly commercialize poverty or personal shame, Made inspire teenagers to not be affraid to dream by giving them examples of others around the world daring to break out of their comfort zone, conquer their fear, and achieve something that they really crave for.

Hhmm.. it got me thinking.. what real step have I taken lately to reach my dream?
